One day Cource on GREEK LOGIC: CLASSICAL MUSLIM RESPONSE

GREEK LOGIC: CLASSICAL MUSLIM RESPONSE

By Shaykh Dr Muhammad Akram Nadwi (Oxford)*

Date: Saturday 24th April 2010
Time: 9am - 5pm
Venue: Ebrahim College, 80 Greenfield Road, London E1 1EJ

Logic has been used by all civilisations throughout the ages not just something invented by the Greeks in particular Aristotle, who codified the principles of logic so that it could be studied systematically.  Islamic Logic removes this Greek theology and philosophy and the two main purposes of study of logic (manţiq) in the Islamic sciences are used in the area of Kalaam and Usul-ul-Fiqh where there is a need assess the strength of a proof. Hence logic is used to make a proper definition of a concept and construct a sound proof or argument and detect flaws in a faulty argument.

This 1 day intensive course will focus on the following:
- Introduction to principal terms and concept
- Appreciation of Greek logic by Imam Ghazali (rh)
- Critique of Greek logic by Ibn Taymiyyah) (rh)
- Concept (Tasawwur) and Verification (Tasdiq)

Broken Britain is devastating the lives of the weak and vulnerable

Three news reports this week alone have highlighted the brutal consequences of Britain’s broken society.

On Wednesday, David Askew, 64, who had learning difficulties was found dead outside his house after confronting several youths who had been tormenting him earlier in the day. It has been revealed that Mr Askew had been a victim of so-called anti-social behaviour for over 10 years. In Greater Manchester, 13-year-old Poppy Bracey was found hanged in her bedroom. Police and council officials were looking into allegations Poppy was being bullied in the run up to the death. And in Glasgow, a family of Russian asylum seekers threw a large wardrobe from a high rise council block - to break the installed anti-suicide netting - before they jumped to their death. The fact that anti-suicide netting was installed is an indication that they were not the only people in the vicinity who were considered to be in danger of finding their lives intolerable.

The deaths are deeply troubling.

They might be unusual but they represent something VERY common – teenage bullying, anti-social behaviour against the elderly, and hostility to immigrants. These are not isolated events but part and parcel of everyday life in Britain today. According to this week’s report by the Chief Inspector of Constabulary Denis O'Connor, there were 3.6m reported incidents of anti-social behaviour in 2008/09 – probably half the actual number as most go unreported for fear of retribution.

In today’s Britain, individualism has increased to the extent that people are isolated and alone; freedom has evolved from freedom to speak, to freedom to insult and now freedom to persecute the old, disabled, young and immigrants – amongst the most vulnerable in society – who have to bear the brunt of unfettered individualism.

When we, as Muslims, hold a mirror to society, not to gloat but to invite debate on the failed secular values that produce such brutal consequences, people criticise us for speaking out. However, unless we speak out and illustrate the link between the values and their rotten fruits in society there is little chance for people - with integrity and a sense of justice - to begin to protect their communities from harm.

As Muslims these examples illustrate the need for us to secure noble Islamic values in our families and community and immunise our young from individualism and freedom gone mad – so that our youth do not add to the troubles of this broken society.

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

“And We have sent you (O Muhammad {saw}) not but as a mercy for the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns and all that exists)." [TMQ Al-Anbiya 21:107]

Miliband Ttries to Gloss Over Britain’s Colonialist Enterprise in Iraq

The British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband’s appearance before the Chilcot Inquiry on 8 March 2010 revealed nothing new but again exposed the arrogance and sheer warmonger nature of another government minister.

Miliband laid the blame squarely on the UN for the eventual invasion. He blamed the "successive failures" of the United Nations to follow through threats to Saddam Hussein and claimed that this had weakened it ahead of the Iraq war. Miliband, in effect, said that Britain upheld international law through invading Iraq. When asked about how the UK was seen by Iraqis Milliband argued British intervention had boosted Britain’s reputation: “We are seen to have played a part in freeing the country from a tyranny that's bitterly remembered.”

Like his colleagues Brown and Blair, it appears Miliband has deluded himself into believing in such lies. The UN directly contributed to the organised misery of millions of Iraqis through sanctions and the death of over 500 000 babies, according to a UNICEF report in 2000. Through a brutal occupation, no fly zones and the corrupt UN oil-for-food programme that restricted Iraqi trade of essential medicine many simple illnesses lead to the eventual death of hundreds of thousands of people. It was both US and British officials who stopped the completion of the weapons inspections programme due to their binge for war. Eventually, resorting to false claims of weapons of mass destruction; ‘colourful’ lies about Iraq’s readiness to launch an attack in 45 minutes; and the bogus dossier in order to justify invasion.

The Labour party war mafia are on a public relations offensive to rewrite the history of the Iraq war using Chilcot. However Britain has a long history of colonisation in the Middle East and whilst the British cabinet may change faces Britain’s true colours have remained the same.
